The Santa Race 5k held on Saturday December 2, 2023 at Creekside Plaza in Gahanna.
Typically an event which finds itself held in cold weather, this year’s event was not typical, and thank goodness! Though overcast, the temperature was a lot warmer than normal and we like it like that. Winter can wait!
This years race was capped at 400 participants and it sold out the week before race day. Though the weather wasn’t typical of a usual, selling out is. The race has sold out on many of the years it has been held at Creekside.
One of the very cool aspects of the Santa Race 5k is the running or dashing of the small kids in the “Little Reindeer Dash.” This event is open to small kids who are unable due to age, run in the main 5k event. Kids aged 6 and under can participate in the short dash to the finish line. Wearing their own race t-shirt, bib number and santa hat, these little one’s get to run in their own special event just like the big kids. This event never fails to impress as the kids run to the finish line finishing under the big arch to adoring parents and grandparents. It’s a lot of fun and is a great way to kickoff the event.
Then to the big boys and girls. The 5k starts off on Mill Street, turns right onto Granville Street and then a very quick turn onto the Big Walnut Trail. This trail is beautiful even in winter as it is all tree lined. The course is an out and back course which allows participants to see their friend and their kids coming back past them having already made the turn at the water stop.
After finishing participants are able to get their well deserved finishers medal, snacks, water and for those faster runners, overall and age group awards.
