The United Way of Union County Ohio has being hosting a run/walk event at Glacier Ridge for as long as I can remember.
The Race History
As far back as the early 2000’s, they hosted the very popular “Game Day 5k”. It was usually around the second week of the football season, when Ohio State would play their first big game against an opponent outside of the Big Ten. Participants would dress in their favorite team uniforms, while some of the little girls would dress up as Ohio State cheerleaders and even Woody stopped by at one point.
Honor Our Heroes
About 6 or so years ago, the concept changed to “Honor Our Heroes 5k and Quarter Marathon.” The idea was to honor the different heroes in our lives. These heroes included policeman, fireman, nurses, teachers and others. The race continued with great success and participants really enjoyed the new distance in the quarter marathon which took them through the new Jerome Village development north of Glacier Ridge Metro Park.
Run United
Rewind about 3 years ago and a newly branded “RunUnited 5k and Quarter Marathon” was unveiled. Same distances, new shirts and medals but still a well attended event and a fabulous time. With the Jerome Village development further along, the course was a very much enjoyed by participants.
Run BOOUnited
Now, 2020, we will have a new theme. This year, the event will become the Run BOOUnited and will be held on Saturday October 31. Same distances, of a 5k and Quarter Marathon but with a twist to play up on some Halloween Fun.
Regardless of the theme or the concept, the United Way of Union County always hosts a good event. The race committee puts a lot of work into making sure participants have a great time and that it’s always a fun, family affair.
As you plan out your 2020 fall calendar, mark this one down and start thinking about what you will wear on race day.
